Handfasting as a ritual is simple, tactile, and deeply symbolic.

Where the Tradition Originates

Handfasting has longstanding roots in Celtic cultures, where it symbolised a couple's intention to bind themselves to each other. Today, it's embraced by couples of all backgrounds who want a ritual that feels meaningful without being overly formal. I often talk about humanist ceremonies as ways to honour traditions yet reinvent and re-imbue them with personal meaning, and handfasting is a notable example of that approach: all the significance of standing in the long-line of human ritual, modernised and personalised for individual couples.

What Actually Happens

During the ceremony, you stand together and join hands. I, or your friends and family, place ribbons, cords, or fabric, over your hands, and gently tie or loop them to create a symbolic knot.

Bringing the 'Village' into your Celebration

Some couples choose colours that represent parts of their relationship, others use materials with personal history. Many couples invite their guests to select and place their own ribbons, while I offer a token of gratitude from the couple for the support and care they have been offered.
